Something that shouldn’t remind me of food…

The panda in this video reminds me of 叉焼包 when it’s hiding from the little girl… and, damnit, it’s making me hungry…

Backyard
The ol’ backyard, which looks a lot nicer than when I lived there

Oh, Atlanta!

What a relaxing day!  After dropping the parents off at the airport (who are currently in SF to watch my second brother get his sheepskin), my little brother and I stopped over at 10th and Piedmont for a spot of breakfast at The Flying Biscuit.  After satiating ourselves on delicious eggs, sausage, potatoes, a biscuit and apple butter, we made our way north again to catch the Speed Racer flick.  It was more enjoyable than some people have let on (one of my co-workers called it the worst movie he has ever seen; really? Does he just not watch many movies?), and I gotta hand it to the Wachowski brothers for turning a crappy Japanese cartoon into a half decent film.  After a Mario Kart session (in part inspired by the movie) we made our way down to Rice, a Thai restaurant in downtown Roswell.  The fare was damn good, and the only way the meal could have been improved is if the $4.50 I paid for my beer wasn’t weighing on my conscious.  I obviously haven’t bought alcohol in a while, because I’ve forgotten how expensive it can be.  Still, I do enjoy Singha…  It’s days like this that help to reinforce my rosy opinion of Atlanta, even though I realize that living here again would be different…

String processing is teh suck…

Monday, May 19th, 2008

Sometimes I wish I could write individual methods (functions, however you like it) in any programming language I liked, and then just throw them all into one file and have them magically work.  For instance, I wrote 24 lines of Java code today to process a string in just the right way.  Then, just because I thought it would be a fun exercise, I wrote the same thing in Perl in 4 lines of code.  le sigh…  Of course, I suppose I could have written it all in one line of code, but who wants to maintain that?

On kindred spirits…

These past two weeks I have been taking a class through my place of work, all for the good of the planet.  I thoroughly enjoyed the course, learning a good deal and getting to show up a few people in the process (that’s right, I’m awesome).  A big part of what made this course awesome was the teacher, who knew the material like the back of his hand (don’t we all waste time mapping the backs of our hands?  Seriously?  You don’t?).  What I didn’t know about the teacher until yesterday is that he is a They Might Be Giants fan; I was looking up his e-mail address on the corporate directory, and under his description field he had “Put your hand inside the puppet head“.  I knew there was something special about him, I just didn’t know it would be so cool.

A philosophical question…

So, if I performed Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” on American Idol, would that be the equivalent of rickrolling America?
