Work and a TV marathon…

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

My poor neglected blog!  I’m surprised it hasn’t destroyed the remainder of the site, tearing up the rug and leaving little surprises all over the place.  But, nay, it has the patience of a saint, awaiting my hackneyed entries.  Who would have thought that me, of all people, might be busy (and lazy, the second reason behind the lack of updates).  Today started at 6:30 AM (and not midnight, for some strange reason), as my iPhone played its kah-razy alarm.  I was going into work, for reasons still unclear to me, but it did bring with it benefits.  I got a few things done, and treated myself to lunch at Potbelly’s (including a chocolate malt…  Mmm…  Chocolate malt…).  Plus, by the time I got home, I still had the whole afternoon ahead of me.  This afternoon has, somewhat predictably, been thoroughly wasted watching the Avatar marathon and attempting to teach myself Mandarin phonology; of course, I’ve always thought productivity was overrated.  At least now I know the difference between the retroflex fricative and the alveolo-palatal fricative…  Now my biggest challenge is trying to determine what I should cook up for dinner.  That may take a few hours to bring to fruition…

Ruminations on a week…

Sunday, March 16th, 2008

Last week turned out to be pretty busy for me, as made evident by the fact that when Wednesday night had rolled around I was wishing it was Friday.  Instead, I had to slog through two more days, but I suppose I’m still alive to tell the tale.  Wednesday evening saw the arrival of elms-fu in the Old Line State, as eager as ever to consume delicious Indian food.  However, I have only heard vague rumors about his interview on Thursday, so I am curious about his job prospects north of the Potomac.  The beginning of the week was devoted to studying computer science related things so that I could form coherent thoughts when drilled on Tuesday.  Thursday evening, then, was a relief, since I was given the opportunity to finally have a home cooked meal and continue watching Avatar, with which I am currently obsessed.  Obsessed to the point where I have been officially living in /co/ on 4chan.org, downloading every related picture I can get a hold of (as well as some not related).  I might also have dependence issues with that website as well.  Next week probably will be only slightly less busy.  I will still be studying, be it Java for work, computer science for potential work, or Perl for my own edification.  Learning programming languages can be fun, which is something I think I may have forgotten in the past two and a half years…

If you want something done right…

My one major gripe with Wordpress themes is that they never work straight out of the box (metaphorically, of course, this one came in a tarball).  The one I am currently using needed a number of additions to get it up to the functional standards of the default Kubrick.  And so, with my thoughts returning to web programming and the glory days of りんご, I am seriously considering just making one myself.  I just noticed that the page links I added to the top are missing when I view my blog using Safari, and frankly that is just unacceptable.  Of course, it doesn’t help that web browsers present HTML in a Rashomon fashion, but I figure if I’m the one behind the source code I’ll know what I would need to fix, and also know that the code is written in a robust fashion, unlike most of the garbage I encounter.  That’s right.  I’m callin’ all y’all computer programmers out!  You been served, son!  (Or whatever.  I never saw that movie.)

Care package…

Monday, March 10th, 2008

Today I received a care package from my mother with the following contents:

  • 5 cans of Masaman curry paste
  • 2 cans of Panang curry paste
  • 1 t-shirt I left in Georgia over Christmas, covered in dog hair
  • Zester

Needless to say, I have the best mom ever.  Mmmm…  Masaman curry…
