Delectable!

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

Yahoola!  I managed to bake edible (and quite delicious, in my biased opinion) brownies for my branch’s “cookie time.”  Cookie time, for those not “in the know,” is a chance for members of my branch to stand around, eat fattening snacks, and gab at the closing of the week.  It’s a nice little tradition, and I volunteered to provision the snacks this week, deciding to bake peanut butter chip chocolate brownies (and buy some cookies from the store for the branch members who can’t handle how “real” my mad baking skillz are).  Considering this is my first attempt at making brownies, and further compounding that with the fact that my oven sucks and can’t maintain a constant temperature, I’d say they turned out well.  See for yourself!

Brownies!

Quote of the day…

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

I find this quote, from an anime fan messageboard, to be hilarious, which probably means there is something wrong with me:

Well its a sick sad world, where a person can’t enjoy their neko lolicon fetish in public. [sic]

Amazon might want to look into their algorithm…

Now, I know that most of the cast was Chinese, but this is ridiculous…

And, yes, I do have an entire recommendation category for my Amazon account devoted to books on China.  Gotta love that Tang Dynasty culture…

Waiting for 7 hours doesn’t sound so bad…

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

In an earlier post I mentioned how I had to wait for 7 hours in Ercan airport for a flight to Istanbul.  Apparently, things could have been worse.  Fortunately, the hijackers were outsmarted by the pilots and passengers so it all ended peacefully.  But I’m assuming this trip took much longer than the 7 hours I had to wait in Ercan playing spades…

Thus spake Lute…

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

The War Czar, Lt. Gen. Douglas Lute, has decided to say something.  Now, this is a man who, until today, I had only known as “The War Czar.”  I’m not entirely sure why we need a War Czar.  Technically, we aren’t at war with anyone.  Congress, who needs reminding of this fact apparently, is the only branch of government that can declare war.  Anyway, Lt. Gen. Lute has stated that the government should consider reinstating the draft.  Now, this contradicts the current administration stance that the all volunteer force is sufficient for the current mission.  Is, then, the War Czar just trying to scare the bejesus out of every 18 to 25 year old male in this country?  Or are his statements indicative of a shift in the administration, which would rather test the waters by going through the advisory War Czar?

I have heard mixed reports about the current surge in Iraq.  Some places say we need far more troops to stop the sectarian violence, and others say that progress is already being seen with the surge.  What benefit, then, would the U.S. derive by reinstating the draft?  Especially since I know we have tens of thousands of troops stationed in Germany, Japan, and South Korea.  And, despite Russia being a little uppity recently, I doubt the Ruskies are planning on rolling into Paris any time soon.  Will the cost of pulling tens of thousands more young men out of the economy really be worth it in terms of force readiness?

I don’t believe it will.

And if you’d like to read some leftist literature on Lt. Gen. Lute’s recent blurb, which includes a rightist conspiracy to install a dictatorship in the U.S. and a lot of grammatical errors, there is this article from Canada’s new socially progressive and cross-cultural national newspaper, whatever that means…  Found via Google News.

The only thing I plan ahead for is…

travel, of course! There have been murmurings of late about a possible sojourn in the Far East next year. Granted, I’ve been back Stateside a whole, what, month now? But, you can’t prepare too far ahead! I just hope Ken picks a big enough apartment to host us all…

Bearing all this in mind, I’m keeping an eye out for interesting sites to see on our potential visit. The Changgyeonggung Palace in Seoul looks quite exquisite. Hopefully by that time Ken will have seen enough cool things to (potentially) take us to. No pressure. And if we get to Tokyo I can finally visit Tokyo Tower! Don’t you love living in a place for five years and never visiting one of its main attractions?

So, with images of Cyprus still freshly burned into my memory, I already have visions of Korea and Japan dancing before my eyes…

An advertisement that works!

I wonder if you can still see signs like this ’round Dublin?

Guinness ad in Gaelic

All I have to say is, “Pointa Guinness, le do thoil!”

Fanboydom…

The worst part about this is that I could imagine myself doing it… In fact, I do it at home. I’m not so sure how willing I would be in a public place, no matter how surrounded by even geekier guys. Maybe if my fellow anime loving friends were there and I had a few beers in me…

Also, who doesn’t love Konata dressed up like Haruhi?

Watching a butterfly aimlessly float across four lanes of traffic, seemingly without a care in the world, is a beautiful sight.  It was probably thinking something like, “Ha ha!  I can fly, bitch!  Trump that!” as it passed me by.  The smug bastard…
