Saints and street signs

Sunday, November 19th, 2006

Today (technically yesterday, but whatever) I saw the new Bond film, Casino Royale.  I thought it was an enjoyable film (unlike a certain Tamil I know), although a little drawn out at times.  Daniel Craig is definitely badass.  However, that isn’t really the reason I’m writing.  I just thought it interesting that I could discern the filming location for the “Montenegro” scenes in the movie based on two seemingly mundane things: a saint and street signs.  From these two things I was able to ascertain that these scenes were actually filmed in the Czech Republic.  In one of the shots of the small town where Casino Royale is located I noticed a statue of a saint, that saint just so happening to be St. John of Nepomuk.  I know this saint from my trip to Prague last year, where statues of St. John of Nepomuk abound, his head always encircled by stars.  The street signs in the town were also distinct, and reminded me of the ones in Prague.  Of course, when I noticed these things I wasn’t entirely sure that it was the Czech Republic.  Montenegro, for all I know, could use similar street signs and also have St. John of Nepomuk as a patron saint.  So, I looked at the wikipedia page about the filming of Casino Royale and confirmed my suspicions.  I guess you do learn something from traveling!  :D

Another reason to do a background check…

Awesome!  If one can become a senior director at the DHS with a fake bachelor’s degree, just think what I could do with a real one!

The Wii Index?

Friday, November 17th, 2006

With the Wii arriving this Sunday (I thought it was today :( ), I decided to read up about it on everyone’s favorite fountain of knowledge, wikipedia. What caught my eye was this pricing chart for the system, which includes the price in the country’s currency, as well as equivalent price in US dollars (with and without VAT even!). The first thing that sprung to mind was the Economist’s Big Mac Index, which takes a not so academic look at disparities in exchange rates. Assuming a truly global market, one should be able to buy a Big Mac or Wii for pretty much the same amount in the US as they would in China or Chennai (yes, I’m using the city as an example, and not India as a whole :P ). Of course, this isn’t the case in the real world. Looking at the Wii pricing chart, we do see that the pre-tax price for the system is roughly the same amongst developed countries. The strong pound does make the system more expensive in England, and if I ever live in England I need to make sure to do all my shopping in the US when I come back on home leave. We also see that after the VAT is applied, the price jumps up because, well, taxes are high in Europe. No getting around that. :) What really surprises me is how much more expensive the system is in South America, even before taxes. I’m not sure why this is, if maybe the base price includes import duties or what. I really would not like to have to buy the Wii in Brazil, that’s for sure. I just wish they had examples of more Asian countries for a greater depth in comparisons. The best price thus far is in Japan, even with tax. So make your way to Tokyo, my friends! Economics aside, the Wii looks friggin’ boss and I can’t wait to get my hands on one. Nintendo seems to have out done themselves on this one.

Invaluable on-line resource!

An article from the Chosun Ilbo on a matter at the heart of my current efforts: how to win a girl! :D Finally, something newsworthy!

Found this over at the Marmot’s Hole

Woohoo! My Latin training has come in handy! I was reading this article on the Northern snakehead when I ran across the word “piscivorous.” I was about to reach for my dictionary (yes, I do own one :P ) when I thought, “Gee, -vorous means an eater of, right? And pisci- is… Fish!” Piscis being Latin for fish, naturally. So my two years of studying Latin weren’t a total loss!

Aequore quot pisces, fronde tegunter aves, quot caelum stellas, tot habet tua Roma puellas.

This looked a whole lot better before it was ignobly defaced by one of my so-called “friends” way back in college.  No appreciation for the fine arts or politics…

Rockin’ the vote

Tuesday, November 7th, 2006

I wonder what it is about election day that gets me so energized?  Is it the prospect of change?  Or just the anticipation over who will win the race?  Especially tight races, like the ones in Maryland?  Will 2006 mark a watershed for US politics?  I guess we’ll find out tomorrow…  :)

And why exactly are elections in November anyway?  It’s cold in November.  I would think more people would vote in nicer weather.  Not that it was too bad today.  Just rainy.  To quote “America (The Book)”

Election Day is always the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.  This is because having it on the first Thursday after the second Saturday in November would be silly.

Here’s to democracy!
